The everyday problem
A serial or IMEI workflow should let the team distinguish one physical device from another of the same model. Test the complete journey, rather than checking only that a number can be entered or scanned.
A workable process
Use a sample label and follow the supported purchase, stock and sale steps. Compare every captured identifier with the physical label. Ask how the system handles an unreadable label, a typing mistake and a product with more than one relevant identifier.
A practical example
Two devices can share the same model description and selling price. If the identifiers are mixed during receipt, the sale quantity may remain correct while the traceability record points to the wrong device. A one-unit test makes the mismatch visible.
Before you finish
Review the output available when searching for the sold identifier. Confirm your label format is supported and train staff to verify captured values instead of assuming every scanned code contains the intended serial information.
Try this check with your team
Use two sample devices of the same model with different identifiers. Receive both, sell one and look up their histories. The sold unit should lead to its sale reference while the other remains distinguishable in available stock.
What the result tells you
This checks unit-level traceability rather than a model total. Review duplicate detection and capture quality in your setup, and confirm how a returned device is matched to its original sale before making a service decision.
