Make a device list before software installation

Support can prepare more effectively when it knows the exact hardware at the counter.

The everyday problem

Support can prepare more effectively when it knows the exact hardware at the counter. Terms such as barcode printer or touch screen are often too broad to confirm compatibility or choose an appropriate layout.

A workable process

Record each device's brand, model, connection type and intended use. Include receipt and label paper sizes, scanner label examples and the Windows version of the computer. Photograph model labels if that makes the information easier to collect accurately.

A practical example

A store may own both a thermal receipt printer and a label printer from the same brand. Their purposes and formats differ, so a generic description can lead to the wrong demonstration. Attach one sample output for each device when discussing setup.

Before you finish

Ask the team to confirm the supported combination and demonstrate a representative scan or print. Keep the final working configuration in the installation notes for future replacements and troubleshooting.

Try this check with your team

Record the exact printer and scanner models, connection types, paper dimensions and operating system. Include a photo of an approved sample label or receipt and describe the expected action after a scan. Test the devices on the computer that will run the counter.

What the result tells you

This lets the implementation team distinguish a layout requirement from a driver, connection or code-format problem. A generic description such as thermal printer is not enough to establish paper width, connection mode or supported output.
