The everyday problem

Checking smaller groups of products can reveal problems without stopping the whole store for a complete count. The aim is a repeatable comparison between physical stock and records, with time to investigate differences.

A workable process

Choose a clearly defined shelf, category or location. Record the count time and pause or track movements affecting that group. Compare like-for-like units and variants. Investigate receiving, sales, returns and transfers before deciding whether an adjustment is appropriate.

A practical example

A shop counts its fast-moving batteries every Friday before opening. One size repeatedly shows a difference while the rest agree. That pattern points toward a specific receiving or checkout problem, giving the team a narrower investigation than a total-stock discrepancy.

Before you finish

Keep a count log and assign follow-up responsibility. Count frequency should reflect your operation; use the results to fix recurring causes instead of repeatedly entering unexplained adjustments. Keep the counted shelf identifiable until the comparison and any recount have been completed.

Try this check with your team

Choose one shelf containing ten clearly identified items. Note the start time and handle movements during the count through your agreed procedure. Compare each counted quantity with the matching unit and variant, then list differences with their likely source documents.

What the result tells you

A useful result is a reviewed discrepancy list, not simply a count completed quickly. Repeated differences in one pack size suggest a unit or mapping problem that should be fixed before extending the exercise to the rest of the store.
